There are so many great places to visit while on holiday in America, this is because of the sheer size of the country and just how many different types of landscapes are spread all around it. Because of this there are some people that enjoy taking road trips across the entire country so that they can see as much of it as they can. However there is also something else that you can do while traveling across the USA and that is gamble. America is famous for its many casinos and just how much fun they can be. The only hard part might be deciding which casinos you might want to visit.

One such place that you might want to check out on your tour is New Orleans, this city has a lot of history that comes out the moment you enter the city limits. There is a party atmosphere that is spread all across the city, this only helps people have fun while gambling in New Orleans. However the only way to gamble is to go on riverboat casinos such as Harrahís casino. This is a fantastic casino with all the games you could want to play as well a restaurant to eat at while on the waterfront.

New Orleans may be a great place to visit, when it comes to gambling there is only one real place to go and that is Las Vegas. This is because the whole city is built purely for your enjoyment with an amazing 122 casinos in such a small place. With all this choice you may get lost as to where you should go but there are a couple of casinos that really stand out, these are the MGM Grand and the Bellagio. These casinos have some of the best casino floors in the world with great selections of games and entertainment.

Sadly however, not everyone can manage a trip to Las Vegas if they want to gamble, and thatís where websites like www.jackpotcity.co.uk/online-slots/ come into play. With 3D casinos and live tables, you no longer have to go the casino, the casino comes to you.

In recent months, there has been a sharp increase in the number of tourists and foreigners arrested in New York according to UK based law firms who report an increased number of calls relating to this issue. Some well known cases include those of Dmitry Smilyanets and Igor Klopov, both of whom were indicated by the authorities in New York and detained in New York prisons.

So what do you do if you get arrested in New York?

It will really depend on the crime that you are being accused of as to what steps you should take. There is a wide spectrum of typical charges including anti-social behaviour, theft, shoplifting, fraud, murder and grand theft auto. So what steps should you take if you are arrested for any crime in New York?

First of all you can deny the charges and go to trial. Of course you can accept the charges that are being brought against you and can either co-operate with the authorities or take a plea. Regardless of which you choose to do, a private defence attorney is the only way that most charges can be cleared or to get the most reduced sentence.

If you are arrested in New York, you have a right to silence meaning you do not have to answer any questions, and you have the right to an attorney, so it is a good idea (especially if you’re unfamiliar with US laws) to find a criminal defense lawyer. Some important numbers that you might need include:

Legal Aid (UK) (+44) 845 345 4 345

Private Lawyer in New York – Bukh Law Firm P.C., 14 Wall St, New York NY 10005, (212) 729-1632

David Jakob Bail Bonds NY (+1) 212-779-2245

British Consulate NYC (+1) 212-745-0200

Immigration ICE (404) 346-2300

It is always advisable to contact a private attorney and notify your embassy that you have been detained.

Now that you have fulfilled your dream of living in the Big Apple, you hope that nothing will go wrong during your time in NYC. You should indeed live your new life to the fullest and enjoy the city’s amazing atmosphere!

However, you never know when you might suffer from bad luck: Accidents happen. Even health-conscious people get sick. Relationships fall apart, and you suddenly feel all alone in a mega city with eight million residents… Therefore, it’s vital to know which medical services NYC provides for people in crisis situations. Below are some health tips for your move to New York.

First, you should make sure to have health insurance coverage – especially if you move to New York from abroad. Expats and “resident aliens” in the States could still be used to their home country’s healthcare system, with universal basic care or quasi-automatic enrolment, if they are lucky. In this case, remember that it is now your responsibility to choose a health insurance plan. Otherwise, a serious illness or emergency care for an accident can turn out to be pretty expensive – and the normal cost of living in NYC is high enough.

Once you succeed in finding work in New York, you should ask your employer about insurance coverage. If you enroll in a plan of their choice, companies often sponsor some of the costs for monthly insurance premiums. Employer-sponsored healthcare plans tend to be cheaper than getting insurance on your own.

But what about freelancers, or people in low-income jobs without company plans? If you are an independent worker – e.g. a lawyer, IT developer, or designer – you ought to check out the Freelancers Union. They are an NPO active in New York and New Jersey, providing, among other things, insurance coverage to the self-employed in several industries.

Those on a very tight budget might want to look into the resources offered by the NY Office of Citywide Health Insurance Access. They organize services for the uninsured.

At one of over 40 community health centers, you can get primary care according to a sliding fee scale. Several dental clinics throughout the city offer low-cost fees for dental treatment if you cannot afford insurance coverage right now. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene dispenses free flu shots, as well as free testing for STDs or tuberculosis.

Regardless of your insurance status, it’s always good to know where the nearest hospital with an A&E department or an outpatient clinic is. There are over 60 hospitals in New York City, and more than 180 in the metropolitan area. The Health and Hospital Corporation provides an interactive map for public clinics. Private facilities are listed in the US News regional hospital ranking.

In emergency situations, dial 911. In addition to the general emergency number, these hotlines come in handy:

1-800-LIFENET (mental health, available in English, Spanish, and Chinese)

800-621-HOPE (domestic violence survivors, available in a dozen languages)

1-800-662-HELP (support for people with substance abuse issues)

You can impress your relatives and friends when you return to the UK after your trip to New York by telling them some of New York’s secrets. They’ll be impressed by your inside knowledge of New York if you reveal the locations of some of the city’s hidden bars. You won’t find the bars listed below unless you know exactly what you’re looking for.

PDT (Please Don’t Tell)
The Hidden Entrance: The cleverly designed entrance is in the Crif Dogs restaurant on St. Marks Place. Go into the phone booth in the restaurant, pick up the phone and press the buzzer twice. You’ll be connected to an employee in the bar who will open the hidden door in the phone booth and let you into the bar. You should call for reservations ahead of time.

Reason To Go: You can get food from the Crif Dogs restaurant in the bar.

Location: 113 St. Marks Place near Avenue A and 1st Avenue. You can take the IRT Lexington Avenue subway or the BMT Canarsie subway to stations within half a mile of the restaurant.

Bar Centrale
The Entrance: You can’t tell it’s a bar from the outside. It’s in a brownstone next to Joe Allen’s Restaurant. There’s no sign on the door.

Reason To Go: It’s considered one of the nicest bars in the area.

Location: 324 West 46th Street between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue. The IND Queens Boulevard subway and the BMT Broadway subway stop at stations within half a mile of the bar.

Insider tip: A lot of banks charge heavily to withdraw money when abroad. Make sure you take time to compare bank accounts before you leave to ensure you are getting the best deal.

Angel’s Share
The Entrance: It’s next to the Village Yokocho Japanese café on the second floor of a building in Greenwich Village. The door to Angel’s Share has a tiny nameplate.

Reason To Go: You can get drinks with unusual ingredients here. The Cheek to Cheek has yogurt and cream. One of the drinks served in the summer has tequila infused with jalapeño.

Location: 8 Stuyvesant Street near 3rd Avenue. The Astor Place subway station and the Eighth Street subway station are less than a quarter mile from the bar.

The Back Room
The Entrance: You have to walk down an alley off of Norfolk Street to get to the front door.

Reason To Go: The décor is amazing. There’s a copper ceiling, vintage wallpaper and a huge fireplace.

Location: 102 Norfolk Street near Delancey Street. It’s a few hundred feet away from the Delancey Street subway station. The Essex Street subway station is about three hundred feet away.

So what are you waiting for? Book a flight, book some usa travel insurance, open a new bank account (that has great international rates), and get yourself to New York to discover the secret bars!

With its cold, snowy winters and ostentatious displays of glitz, New York ranks among the best cities of the world in which to spend the festive season. Famed for its window displays and over-the-top trees, NYC at Christmas is nothing short of spectacular. So pack your best winter warming garments, book a last minute flight to and find a hotel in New York, and prepare for an end-of-year treat like you’ve never seen before…

Taking in a Broadway show is a rite of passage to be undertaken by any visitor to New York. The most festive show running this Christmas has to be the new adaptation of Will Ferrell’s 2003 seasonal box office smash ‘Elf’. The show follows the story of Buddy, an orphan raised by Santa after crawling into his gift bag one Christmas Eve. It recreates some of the highlights of the city in style, including Central Park and the Rockefeller Center.

The real Rockefeller Center is home to one of the city’s most celebrated Christmas trees. And that’s saying something in a city which really ups the ante when it comes to decorating large firs. There are 104 of them lining Park Avenue; decorating them is a tradition dating back to 1945, when the trees were first lit in remembrance of fallen World War II soldiers. Each tree on the stretch (between 54th and 96th Sts) is strung with 25 strands of dazzling white lights. (http://www.rockefellercenter.com/events/2012/11/28/2012-rockefeller-center-tree-lighting/ )

Even more famous than New York’s tree-dressing are the department store window displays which seem to get more grandiose with every year. Unveiled at Thanksgiving and staying up into the new year, the sheer, unbridled dedication to the season and craftsmanship on display make for one of the best freebies you can get in NYC. This year, the displays will pay homage to Yuletide traditions across the centuries as part of ‘The Magic of Christmas’ theme.

Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a famished stroll into a food market, and a lazy idle back out again after a couple of hours munching, browsing and imbibing. The king of them all is widely considered to be the Union Square Market (http://www.grownyc.org/unionsquaregreenmarket) , which plays host to some 125 local and national vendors, selling everything from arts and crafts and jewelry, to the ubiquitous hot dogs and chestnuts. Now in its 18th year, this bustling bazaar makes its home under festive awnings of red and white stripes. If you’re in NYC on a budget, there’s no better – or cheaper – distraction from the tempting-but-financially-dangerous big-name retail stores.

The supporting character in this picture-postcard scene is the weather. During the winter, temperatures frequently dip below -13 degrees Fahrenheit. New York state is often blanketed in snow, which can makes for a thrillingly festive daytrip out of the city. NYC itself is milder in the winter and, thanks to the warming effect of the metropolitan buzz, will often melt what ever snow does fall. The metro area is also shielded from the worst of the northwestern front by hilly terrain just outside the city, so if you can find the time to take a train upstate, you’re almost guaranteed a touch of snow this Christmas.

For those who have already made the move to New York, the famous nickname means a lot more than to someone coming from overseas. So for those expats out there and others thinking about coming to New York to get some experience – whether culturally, professionally, or for leisure – New York City has a little bit of everything.

For those hoping to experience what it feels like to be exposed to multiple cultures without traveling around an entire country, New York is the place to be. The city has developed into a true global destination. Over 35 percent of those living in New York City and its metropolitan area aren’t from the US originally, which makes it extremely diverse. With its own Little Italy and Chinatown districts, and many more neighborhoods, it truly is a modern melting pot of today’s numerous cultures.

One of the toughest problems you’ll be faced with when moving to New York is where to look for housing. It would be great if everyone could live in downtown Manhattan, but unfortunately that is not the way the world works. Other than income, it is important to take a few things into consideration. Access to the subway and proximity to work are extremely important. It sounds pretty obvious, but you can save a tremendous amount of time and money while living in New York if you plan ahead, do the research, and ask around as well.

Regarding keeping busy, if you like getting a little fresh air, wander around the Big Apple’s famous Central Park, as well as Washington Square and the open shopping area in Madison Square Garden. Or, if you consider yourself more of an artist at heart, visit some of the 500 plus art galleries – and Broadway, of course.

If you’re moving to New York City, and – like many other New Yorkers – have a passion for sports, it will be harder picking a team to support than actually making it to a game. Two baseball teams, two football teams, a basketball team, and one professional soccer team all call the Big Apple home!

So, you can see there’s a little bit of just about everything, for just about anyone. If you are still thinking about living in New York, then take a leap and make the move because, no matter what you’re looking for, the Big Apple is bound to have it!

Accommodation

Whenever you think of staying in the Big Apple, images of loft apartments come to mind. Such impressions probably stemmed from the many years of watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S. But the thing is, a total NY experience wouldn’t be one without staying in a genuine loft apartment. Renting private apartments in the city center of New York has become a popular option thanks to the internet. Depending whether you are after a loft, or no loft, there is always something will suit the needs of most tourists. And with space and comfort all coming in at a good price, this accommodation option is always an attractive one.

Williamsburg

Unless your holiday accommodation happens to be in Williamsburg, this area of New York worth checking out, if you are want the total NY experience. Seeing that the first people who settled in this now ‘hipster ridden’ district were immigrants, it is a significant area for the city because it is immigrants and settlers that have shaped New York into the place it is today. You can find everything in this culturally saturated district. Great food, entertainment, shopping and atmosphere. Williamsburg has it all for tourists and locals alike.

Water Taxi Beach

If you are planning to live like a resident of New York, then make your way to Water Taxi Beach. Although the city runs at the pace of a bullet, New Yorkers can take some time out and admire the grand metropolitan landscape from a far, whilst relaxing and grabbing a bite to eat or drink at a well-constructed man made beach. Not a bad idea for the lucky ones who happen to be in the city during summer. Of course, if you don’t happen to make it to Water Taxi Beach, then taking some time out at Central Park is always the best alternative.
Although tourists are never in short supply of things to see and do, going off the beaten track a little bit, whether you rent a private apartment with Wimdu or visit some local establishments, is always the best way to go, especially if you want to feel like your living in New York.

New York City has a reputation for being dangerous and violent. While it is true that the Big Apple has its share of crime, most visitors to the city will never witness these illicit events. Still, in order to ensure safety and security, there are spots in the City that those taking flights to New York should take measures to avoid.

1. Brownsville
The Murder Capital of New York remains the most dangerous spot for tourists. Brownsville is known for its elevated levels of high school dropouts, extreme drug problems, and low income.

2. Hunts Point
This Bronx neighborhood is notorious for prostitution and other types of crime. Those who are not in the know may be drawn to Hunts Point due to the area’s long history and the number of parks. However, Hunts Point should be mostly avoided by non-locals.

3. Brooklyn Heights
A seemingly family-friendly neighborhood, crime has risen in Brooklyn Heights in recent years. Many tourists may wish to visit the area due to its stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty.

4. Flatiron District
Tourists need not worry about violent crime in the Flatiron District. Other crimes, such as petty theft and grand larceny, prevail in this spot. Thanks to the number of noteworthy buildings and shopping establishments, the Flatiron District is a prime target.

5. Downtown
This affluent area is oft visited by tourists for many reasons. However, it is one of the most crime ridden spots in the city and has New York’s third highest rate of grand larceny. When going downtown, valuables should be safeguarded in a secure location in the hotel.

6. Hell’s Kitchen
Muggings are not uncommon in this spot that was formerly known as a safe-haven for gang activity. Those who choose to visit this area should make sure that bags are secured and valuables hidden from sight.

7. Greenwich Village
The eclectic shops and exuberant nightlife of Greenwich Village draw tourists in from far and wide. However, purse-snatching, muggings, and far more violent crimes are not uncommon here. Tourists should avoid Greenwich Village after dark, travel in groups, and stay alert any time of the day.

8. Clinton Hill
The upscale neighborhood of Clinton Hill may be interesting for those wishing to see mansions that date to the mid-19th century. However, the crime rate that had previously dropped is once again on the rise, due largely to muggings, burglary, and car theft.

9. Bedford-Stuyvesant
Bed-Stuy is not a hot spot for tourism, which makes it easy to avoid. This Brooklyn neighborhood has been ranked as one of the most dangerous areas of New York City due to its high numbers of murders and robberies.

10. Midtown
Most tourists visiting New York City simply cannot avoid Midtown. This is the heart of the City and the one spot that is most sought by those taking flights to New York. Unfortunately, it is also a prime spot for pick-pocketing, muggings, and violent crimes. Tourists that visit Midtown should remain aware of their belongings at all times.

New York is one of the must busy, vibrant and exciting cities in the world. Times Square is a shopper’s paradise, as well as being home to restaurants, theatres and more. There is always something going on so you will never be bored.

In the heart of the city lies some of the most luxurious hotels including the Waldorf Astoria which is a quick 15 minute walk from Times Square. However, if you’ve decided to save a few dollars by staying in a hostel which has WIFI so you can regularly check your email, or even play partypoker and send your family and friends photos from your trip so far, then you might have saved enough money so you can afford to see a show or go out for a fancy meal. No matter what you’re in the mood for, whether it’s Japanese or Mexican food, Times Square has it covered. Below are two great places located in Times Square which you shouldn’t miss out on.

Famous Dave’s BBQ – 701, 7th Avenue

The motto here is ‘Eat Like A Pig’ and you certainly can with the portion sizes provided. Famous Dave’s BBQ is a traditional American diner whose signature dish is the barbecued steak and fries, served with all the American trimmings like BBQ beans, sour dough bread and corn on the cob. The price is reasonable for the portion size – you certainly won’t need a dessert!

Cold Stone Creamery – 253 W 42nd St

You will never again have ice-cream like the ones served at Cold Stone Creamery. Here, you get to create your very own dessert, or pick from the menu. After deciding on your flavor of ice-cream, you can select from hundreds of fillings. These range from fresh fruit and chocolate to cookie chunks and peanut butter. The ice-cream is then placed on a frozen chopping board where the staff knead and roll it around using special spatulas. It is then covered in sauce and placed in a huge chocolate covered wafer.

New York screams luxury. Everything from the sidewalks to the grand buildings on the Upper East Side whispers, ‘I am the city of your dreams’. Every girl who watches American television programmes wants to visit New York and experience the city seen in Gossip Girl and Sex and the City. Although these programmes are clearly fictional one thing is for sure, New York plays a major role in the storyline. Every character, whether that is Blair or Carrie, falls in love with the fashion, the noise and above all the city in all its glory.

If you are after a luxurious holiday experience then New York is the destination for you. You can spend the afternoon on Fifth Avenue, exploring Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys in the hope of spotting a celeb or a real life Upper East Sider. With restaurants, bars and events galore a trip to New York certainly won’t be quiet.

There are so many places to visit; including 21 Club’s bar room which should not be missed. The stunning venue has entertained many politicians, celebrities and sports players over the years. Most of the guests brought presents with them for the bar, which were then stuck to the ceiling. You can see a submarine donated by Kennedy and the helmets of football legends Frank Gifford and John Riggins.

If you fancy a stroll around the Upper East Side then you need to visit Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the major of New York City. This stunning building is one of the last villas from that era, and is of significant historical importance.

There are several things that you will need to take with you when you go to the Big Apple. Make sure you have all your relevant travel documents and health insurance. There are many comparison sites out there, including MoneySupermarket.com which can help you find the right cover for the trip of a lifetime.

New York truly is one of the most stylish cities in the world, so why not enjoy the luxury for a week or two?

New York is the city of dreams, and of course this deeply resonates with every shopaholic. Shopping in New York is simply exhilarating. From 5th Avenue to the funky shops in SoHo, shoppers can delight in luxury designer to vintage finds in just a moment’s notice on the subway. Staying in some of the Cheap New York City Hotels in Midtown can ensure you have all the time (and money) you need to shop till you drop.

For the new shopper in New York, 5h Avenue is the mecca of dreams. The easiest way to get to 5th Avenue is by taking the subway system, nearest lines are N, Q and R. Bergdorf Goodman (If you visit during the Christmas holidays check out their impressive window displays!), Barneys New York, and Tiffany & Co. are just a few familiar sights you will see on 5th Ave. Why not stop in at Cartier on 653 Fifth Ave. for some luscious diamonds or Louis Vuitton at 611 57th St. for a luxury leather handbag? Teenage girls will get a kick out of the American Girl Place at 609 Fifth Ave.

Check out some of the old fashioned designer trunk shows appearing again in New York. Trunk shows are small private viewings of individual designer collections, you will have to keep your eyes and ears open as Trunk shows are typically by invitation only, but occasionally Fashion Houses will post flyers throughout NYC to attract tourists. Checking out NY blogs is another way to stay posted on upcoming Trunk shows in NYC.

To go with your new Chanel handbag, perhaps you feel the urge to splurge on some vintage clothing. Shopping for vintage clothing gives shoppers a chance to explore other areas of New York. East Village and SoHo are the top districts to check out for vintage clothing in New York. In East Village, Cadillac’s Castle is the answer to buying designer clothing at an affordable cost. No Relation Vintage is also an affordable vintage store that offers dresses from the 1950′s and psychedelic shades from the 70′s.

On a rainy day, perhaps you want to take a break from the outdoors and find a shopping mall to be your shelter. Throughout NYC, one can find 7 malls. Manhattan Mall, Trump Tower, and Takashimaya are all worth a look. Located at Fifth Avenue, Trump Tower has 5 levels of some of the most luxury shopping you can find. You will have to check out the Gucci store on the ground floor of the Trump Tower. Manhattan Mall is located at 100 W. 33rd Street at Broadway. Manhattan Mall is the place to shop for deals on clothing at stores like Charlotte Russe or Express.

To make the most out of your shopping adventures in NYC, no trip is complete without a stop at Ricky’s NYC. Ricky’s NYC can be described in one word, and that is: fabulous. The store is filled with bold makeup, the latest hair products, and even some exotic toys. Ricky’s NYC has about 20 locations scattered throughout Manhattan.

In addition to Ricky’s, shoppers can find cosmetic stores galore in NYC. If you are feeling creative, head on over to Make Up For Ever located between 5th Ave. and University, where you can create your own palette of lip colors. The M.A.C. Pro Showroom is another hotspot to visit with over 250 of its exclusive products available for showing to the public. The Showroom is located between Fifth Ave. and Avenue of the Americas. If you just want to enjoy some affordable makeup, then take a look at the plethora of products available at Duane Reade at Herald Square. Be sure to visit the second floor for the widest range of OPI products and traditional brands like Revlon and L’Oreal.

New York City truly is a shopper’s Dream.

Travel firm First Choice will make all its holidays “all inclusive” from next year, claiming it will save money.

It says from next summer it will become the UK’s first mainstream holiday company specialising in the field.

The package will include flights, in-resort transfers, hotel accommodation, three meals a day and unlimited local drinks as standard.

The move is the polar opposite from the past decade’s trend of building your own holiday.

First Choice said its research had shown that demand for all-inclusive holidays had grown by 32% in five years. Already, 65% of its holidays are of this type.

Johan Lundgren, managing director of TUI UK & Ireland, the parent company of First Choice, said the move was a first for the mainstream holiday industry.

It is marketing all-inclusive deals as suitable for budget conscious UK holidaymakers, citing a “price test”, in which it compared the cost of a family holiday at its all-inclusive resort in Benidorm, to one staying in a bed and breakfast.

This, it said, showed a typical family could save more than £500 a week by taking the all-in option.

Of that, £132 was car hire, which was not included in the all-in holiday.

It suggested that a family staying at a bed and breakfast would pay £157.06 a week on entertainment and £38.43 on snacks.

Britons love going to New York, in part for the rich and greasy fare, grey skies and jostling crowds, and also because New York’s winding city streets and jam-packed museums are the USA’s answer to London. Visitors from the UK can book cheap holidays to New York with board included, and set out to explore the Big Apple. The following must-see New York destinations are popular for travellers making the trans-Atlantic trip.

Times Square buzzes with tourists, vendors, artists and businesspeople, and the bright lights are reminiscent of London’s Piccadilly Square. From Broadway to the MTV Studios, Times Square offers visitors a full palette of entertainment. Wander through this famous borough of Manhattan; popularly known as “the Crossroads of the World”.

Film enthusiasts will instantly recognise the beauty and tranquillity of Central Park, which has graced cinema screens for years, and which is quintessentially New York. Take a horse-drawn carriage through the park, have a look at the Alice in Wonderland statue, catch a philharmonic concert or settle down with a blanket and a picnic in this historic place.

No visit to New York would be complete without a tour through the city’s renowned art museums: from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in which visitors can get lost for days, to the Guggenheim and Cooper-Hewitt museum on Museum Mile. Two smaller museums are the Frick and Neue Galerie New York.

Britain may not have a reputation for high cuisine, but that doesn’t mean Britons don’t appreciate their grub. Experience New York’s multinational flare in some of the best restaurants in the world; from French, Italian and Indian to Turkish, Thai, African and more. One of the best things about New York is that it has a reputation for fine dining, whether you stop at a corner café, bistro or dress up for a lavish meal. Remember to try a New York hotdog, and venture in to Chinatown to taste the best Chinese cuisine outside of China (and don’t forget to stop in at Little Italy, too!).

There is so much to see and do in the most populous city in the United States, where nationalities from all over the world come together in a jumble of colour and flavour. From shopping, clubbing and people watching, to eating, relaxing and learning, New York is a favourite for visitors from the UK and all over the world.

It is a little known fact that the island of Manhattan was given its name after the Native American word Man-hat-tan, meaning “general place of inebriation”. This may seem like a joke, but it is entirely true. Obviously, Manhattan was a fun place to be back then also, but did its first inhabitants ever imagine it would become the party city it is today?

One thing that may also surprise the foreign bar-hopper is that the flashy, ostentatious bars and clubs in the city are not necessarily guaranteed to be the best night out. I have seen more celebrities in small, dingy bars than I have seen in expensive nightclubs. I also got to pick tunes on the duke box and order pitchers of beer while chatting to them! This is because of the popularity of the so called “dive bar” in New York. It provides a spot for celebrities to hide-out and an inexpensive, laid back atmosphere for us mere mortals. The suits, NYU students, labourers, tourists and bar hogs all come together with one common goal in what turns out to be a strange but interesting conglomerate.

Take for instance Rudy’s Bar and Grill, a Hell’s Kitchen landmark since 1933. This is one bar that is guaranteed to weather the recession and many more to come. Its concept is very simple. Sell customers reasonably priced drinks (explained very clearly in a large drinks menu above the counter), offer them free hotdogs with every drink, provide a juke box for them to control the songs and, ahem…red PVC plastic chair booths to sit in. Ok, so this last part is just a bit trashy, but the only way to embrace it is to see it as one of the marvellously random features of Rudy’s, just like the giant pig statue that stands outside as a greeter to lonely wanderers (and is often decked out in costume, depending on the season). You can expect a wonderful mix of people in this gem of a bar, especially after 5 when office workers come in search of their fix and the place starts to really fill up. Rudy’s Bar and Grill is located at 44th Street and Ninth Avenue, just two blocks from the hustle and bustle of Times Square. Check out its fascinating history and the website in general at www.rudysbarnyc.com.

Jimmy’s Corner is another neighbourhood gem that is well worth checking out. Located just a block from Times Square, it boasts the most boxing memorabilia of another other bar in the city, squeezed into the tightest space. The reason for this is its owner, Jimmy Glenn, a former trainer of professional fighters and a regular at the bar himself. The crowd of charming regulars mixed with the odd tourist gives you a funny reminder that even in a city as crazy and fast-paced as New York, there are still locals who have their own routines. A small store front presence from the street makes this gem a little difficult to find but, upon entering, you find yourself in a long cavernous bar with back room tables: Good for groups of three or four but anything larger than that is a bit on the ambitious side, given the lack of space. Also, don’t try to bust a move inside the bar, although the jukebox has some of the most soulful hits you’ll find in the city. Instead, be amazed at the price of $3 for draft beer and $5 for cocktails, a veritable anomaly in New York, not to mind Times Square. If you fancy sporting memorabilia, down-to-earth staff, cheap drinks and good tunes, this is your spot! Jimmy’s Corner is located on 44th Street between Broadway and Avenue of the Americas.

If you desire something a little fancier, The View Restaurant and Bar in Times Square is a fabulous find. This establishment is virtually impossible to find from the street, given the fact that it is situated above the Marriott Marquis Hotel on 45th Street and Broadway. There is no experience comparable to dining right in the heart of Times Square Theatre District in the only revolving restaurant in New York City. That’s right, it revolves! Prepare to take in some breathtaking panoramic view of the city at night. Also be prepared to spend a good deal of your vacation money, since prices for food start at $50 and run considerably high. There is a pre-theatre special of $69 for dinner that ends at 6:30pm. Dress code is business casual. The View is wheelchair accessible.

Apotheke bar in Chinatown is an experience to say the least. This lavish prohibition-style speakeasy/cocktail lounge is literally hidden down a street in Chinatown named Doyer Street, that has to be the shortest street in Manhattan at just a block long and, from my experience, the sketchiest. Don’t let this put you off, however. At the end of the Street sits a “restaurant” called the Golden Flower with (conspicuously enough) a bouncer outside it; once you go through the door you are greeted with a soothing scent, the reason being that the light sconces are filled with an absinthe-like herbal liquid that emits the scent. As for the bar, it is a 30 foot long and 6 foot wide performance bar (the previous owner used to light liquor on fire along the length of the bar before it was put to a stop), custom built using imported marble and some pressed tin purchased from an antique store that also sold the owner a 200-year-old door equipped with a cool sliding peep-hole. The ceiling is painted with gold leaf, the furniture sparse; a large red couch here, a small ottoman there. Interestingly enough, the lounge used to be an opium den. It is now modelled to look like an old European apothecary and the bartenders are famed for their mixology skills, with an extensive menu offering over 250 specialty cocktails, divided into categories such as Health and Beauty (containing cucumber, rose water, floral notes), Stress Relievers (lavender and sage), Pain Killers (cayenne, habanero), Stimulants (espresso, Red Bull), Aphrodisiacs (Champagne, cognac) and Pharmaceuticals (herbal elixirs). If my memory serves me correctly, every drink I tried was delicious, although I didn’t try as many as I wanted to, since they start at a whopping $15. Try get there early, around 8.30 before the bar fills up and it’s still easy to get in. And if you prefer jazz over house/techno, make sure to visit on a Monday, when there is an awesome jazz band playing, (which I thought was a lot more fitting). Apotheke is located at 9 Doyer Street and the closest subway stops are the 6, J, M, N, Q, R, W, Z at canal Street. Hours are Mon-Sat 6:30pm-2am, Sun 8pm-2am. Bear in mind that Apotheke doesn’t serve food, so you may want to drop into one of the many restaurants in the area for some mouth-watering dumplings or what have you.

This is simply a run-down of the watering holes that I have frequented often and make it my duty to go back to every time I visit the city. Brooklyn is also an absolute favourite of mine, with Williamsburg being a particular hotbed of activity for hipsters and tourists alike. If you’re in the mood for dining out, try Sea Thai restaurant on Bedford Avenue and North Sixth Street for some delicious and affordable bites in a beautifully atmospheric renovated warehouse. While you’re there, check out the eclectic bars and nightclubs with their various genres of music. If you’re heading to the East Village and Alphabet City, on the other hand, quench your thirst at Beauty Bar for the utmost in trendy, with its former interior as a 1950’s hair salon still intact (and avail of a $10 cocktail and manicure special!). For the best pizza in town, in my opinion, head to Grimaldi’s underneath the Brooklyn Bridge and enjoy a real authentic Italian experience! Just be prepared to wait in line for up to 30 mins- between its location and the quality of its pizzas (at affordable prices), this place is truly famous. Whichever establishment you find yourself wandering into, remember to have a good time, be daring, try something you’ve never had before and if you’re part of a tour group, try your best to wake at a reasonable hour the next morning!

Shops, sights, restaurant and clubs, New York has it all, but what you probably didn’t know is that each New York neighbourhood is very gay friendly. The friendliest areas would be Greenwich Village and Chelsea but Upper West side, Upper East side, midtown and Harlem follow closely behind. For a list of the very best in gay friendly bars, restaurants and hotels then just keep reading;

Therapy

Found on 52nd St. between 8th and 9th Ave, this gay friendly bar often houses the most vibrant customers and has a very nice selection of cocktails. There is also free entertainment which includes gay friendly comedians, DJ’s and an open-mic night – which to be honest is hilarious!

Henrietta Hudson

This is possibly New York’s most popular lesbian club which is found at 438 Hudson Street at Morton Street. It’s got pool tables, DJ’s and bands which play on Wednesdays. Most importantly though, it’s always packed full of likeminded lesbian girls who are out to party and have a good time!

GYM Sports Bar

If you’re a huge sports fan then you’ll love this! It’s New York’s very own gay friendly sports bar which shows all the live footage of baseball, basketball and American football. With nine flat screen televisions, pool tables and sofas you can sink into, this place is definitely a sports fans heaven. Of course with it being primarily designed for gay people to relax and watch the games, most of its punters are likeminded homosexuals. This nifty little place can be found at 167 8th Ave at 18th Street.

Chelsea Pines Inn

You seriously won’t find it difficult to find a gay friendly hotel in New York, however Chelsea Pines Inn makes it onto the list because it’s simply the best! Based in the centre of gay New York, Chelsea Pines Inn is in a perfect location with lots of bars, clubs and transport links nearby. Each of its rooms is decorated with posters of gay icons and movie stars from classic Hollywood. Each room also has everything you could possibly need and more! The hotel can be found at 317 West 14th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenue.

West Side Club

A spa which is designed for gay men only where you can unwind steam room or sauna, grab a shower with other men or even just watch a movie! It’s a fantastic hang out place for homosexual men who are looking for a way to relax after a hard days work or night of partying. It can be found between 5th and 6th avenue at 27 west of 20th street and is open 7 days a week.

Gunnison Beach

It doesn’t matter if you’re straight, gay or bisexual, this beach is for everyone! It’s basically a nudist beach which of course has plenty of nude people. It’s a place where you can just relax on a sandy beach and leave all your troubles behind. It can get a little crowded on the weekend so I advise you to check it out on a weekday instead.

So whatever it is that you’re into, from wild nights out to a more relaxing approach to life, New York has it all. So many places for you to enjoy in complete comfort and security knowing that you are amongst friends and can really be yourself!

Spending 48 hours in New York or you’ve just moved to New York City and want to tick off the city’s most famous attractions? In this article, we explore 15 of New York’s most famous tourist attractions.

See a Broadway Show

Broadway is literally thronged with promoters all hustling to get you into their show and, with so much choice, it can be overwhelming, to say the least. 42nd Street to 49th Street is particularly heady. My advice: in order to secure your place in the coveted audience seat of a Broadway musical, it is best to first accept all the flyers that are thrust upon you and later, be it in a restaurant or back in your hotel room, decide which one to opt for. That way, you have all the choice in the world and you can decide at your leisure. Also, promoters are always hopeful that you’ll take a flyer so for their sake and yours (so you can keep walking), take one. Also, if they ask you to mention their name upon arrival, do it. If you enjoy a great night’s entertainment, it’s a way of showing appreciation for some good advice.

Visit the Statue of Liberty

Majestic as ever, Lady Liberty stands just off the southern tip of Manhattan on the way to Staten Island like a beacon to passing travellers. If you are not particularly interested in stepping aboard Liberty Island, simply hop aboard the ferry to Staten Island from Whitehall Terminal completely free of charge and spot the Statue of Liberty from the right side of the deck. Since the terminal is relatively small, it is very easy to navigate and should be at the top of any tourist’s to-do list.

Visit Ellis Island

Whether or not you are a history buff, you’ll find it hard to visit Ellis Island and be untouched by the stories and displays exhibited on the walls of its visitor centre. This was the first point of contact for millions of immigrants and the centre where their fate was essentially decided. Health inspections were held in order to determine whether a person could stay on in the states or make the lonely trip back. If you have ancestors who came to New York and simply lost touch with family thereafter, try your hand at genealogy with the family tree tracking service. Try to fight back a tear as you hear their stories, observe their pictures and most fascinating, look at the log where names of the immigrants were written.

Stroll the Brooklyn Bridge

This magnificent structure is another must-see for any discerning tourist. Don’t be put off by the fact that it seems off the beaten track all the way down in lower Manhattan, it is so simple to access by hopping on the 4 train headed downtown from Union Square. And it happens to be just around the corner from City Hall, which is also worth a look given its architecture and regular appearance in movies. The train stops right at the bridge and, by day or by night, it’s a sight to be seen. This suspension bridge boasts the most tourist-friendly paths I have ever seen, with an option to walk or cycle. It is truly a beauty.

Head to the top of the Empire State Building

Vertigo aside, the view from the 102nd floor of the Empire State Building is really incomparable. There is a feeling of all powerfulness as you stand at the top of this towering mass of steel, at one with the clouds, and eyeball the miniscule pedestrians and cars going about their business below. It is in stark contrast to the heady feeling you get from being amongst them. But not only is this venture worth-while because of the view, the building itself holds a wealth of history. If walls could talk they would tell tourists about the fearless steel-workers and labourers, slaving away at 1,250 ft to bring us the art-deco building as it is today. It has been named by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and deservedly so. Visit the American icon at 350 5th Avenue between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 a.m.

Lift your Spirit with the Harlem Gospel Choir

Through films and series, so much vilifying has been done of Harlem and not enough praise for its vibrant culture. It is a truly exciting place to visit. Very many artists and bands have their roots in Harlem, a predominantly Hispanic and African-American neighbourhood of upper Manhattan and no trip is complete without taking in a performance from the Harlem Gospel Choir. For more information visit www.welcometoharlem.com or www.harlemheritage.com.

Hang out in Times Square

Times Square is and always has been the epitome of New York, in all its flashy, star-studded glory. It has well earned its title as Crossroads of the World. Very little has changed since 1904, when the square, originally called Longacre square, was called Times Square after the New York Times set up office in the humongous, iconic south tower we see today on 42nd Street. Many residents of New York avoid mid-town, opting instead to hang out in uber-trendy holes in the wall, the likes of which are found in the East Village. However, it never lost its excitement for me and I worked there. There is a wonderful feeling of total anonymity in this glowing strip and yet, a feeling that you can accomplish anything there. Just take for example the naked cowboy. A household name in Times Square, this entertainer, whose real name happens to be Robert, stands in his y-fronts (with Naked Cowboy emblazoned on the back) and a Stetson hat come rain or shine, crooning away on a guitar. People probably pinned him for crazy when he first suggested the idea but low and behold, he has become insanely rich and famous from it. If you end up spending a summer in the city, you will become surprised at how immune you are to sights like this and that is the magic of Times Square!

Check out New York’s ultra-hip Lower East Side

If you are visiting the city for a short period of time, please do not pass up the opportunity to visit Manhattan’s Lower East Side, also referred to as The East Village or simple The Village. There are a couple of streets in specific that are worth stopping by. Greenwich Village is the spot where, Bob Dylan, The Beatles and a host of other bands and artists spent their downtime in the 19Xs and it still has not lost its cool. St. Mark’s Place is the ultimate hang out spot, with its restaurants (try Dallas BBQ!), bars, tattoo & piercing parlours and vintage clothes shops. There is also a plethora of street stalls, great for picking up some presents for the folks at home. Alphabet city, though quieter in a lot of respects, still has its share of great bars including Beauty Bar, a retro beauty parlour inspired bar where you can get a cocktail and a manicure for $10; and Manetoba, a dive bar where famous comedians like to hide out.

Eat in Little Italy

This is not only the spot for some of the most genuine homemade Italian food you will ever scoff, it is also a favourite celebrity hide-out. Look out for the oldest restaurants (and not necessarily the most expensive). Lombardi’s claims to be the oldest pizzeria, while Il Palazzo is smack in the heart of Little Italy and boasts a two-level, enchanting atmosphere. If you really want to hang with the hip crows, check out Da Nico Risorante. Buon appetito!

Pick up a bargain in China Town

All along Canal Street in China Town there are vendors crying out to sell you bags, jewellery, sunglasses- you name it- all for ridiculously cheap prices. Bargaining skills will come in handy in this heady neighbourhood, so if you are at all meek, bring along a ruthless companion or be prepared for a rush! Although the authenticity of the products are certainly in question in some of the cases, you will find it hard to be snobby at the crucial moment, so exquisite is the craftsmanship. When you’re done, take in the sights and sounds of China Town, the spices and fish counters. And after you’ve worked up a hunger, dine in any of the real-deal restaurants.

Take a bus tour

Since there are so many bus tours to choose from, I cannot really say which is the most fun outing but, depending on your mood, you will find just the one to suit. As with most everything in New York, you will be spoiled for choice. The city bus tour is a classic and, for some people, the easiest and safest choice, given that there is no chance of getting lost – the city is brought to you! You can also get off at any stop you want and board the bus again the next day, using the same pass. There are a number of tours to choose from within the city bus company, depending on your wallet and taste. On the other hand, if you fancy yourself a film buff, take one of the many film and sitcom tours about the city that bring you to the actual locations where the scenes were shot.

Get on a chat show – for free!

When I worked in the city, I had a friend whose job it was to stand in Times Square and quiz tourists on trivia based on The Late Show with David Letterman. The lucky tourists who answered correctly were awarded free tickets to the show, just like that. And for anyone who doesn’t believe it’s possible, not only is it possible but she was dying to give them away, since she had to give out a certain amount before finishing work for the day. Try your luck and be star-struck!

Cycle/walk/horse and carriage Central Park

Everything you have seen in movies and popular sitcoms is exactly as you expected upon walking into Central Park. Taking the main entrance into the park from Columbus Circle on Park Avenue and 60th Street, the tree-lined park stands pretty as ever with its inviting pathways and greens. Depending on the time of year, you can grab a rental bike for $30 for a two hour sojourn through the park or a horse and trap ride for a more expensive price (but, split between a group, it’s nothing and all the work is done for you!). Of course, all means of transport are available all times of the year but there is something so breathtakingly romantic about a horse and trap ride around the sprawling park in the winter, especially if there is a chance of snow. Just remember to wrap up! While in the park, take in the petting zoo, strawberry fields, the lake with its weeping willows and grassy banks and Lasker swimming pool between 106th and 108th Street, which converts into an ice skating rink in the winter!

Fire Island

Fire Island was first put on the map as an important whaling centre, similar to Nantucket, back in 1653. The next development was the lighthouse, which has become synonymous with Fire Island. For many European immigrants making transatlantic boat crossings, this lighthouse was the first sight of land upon arrival into America and an incredibly assuring sign. Soon, Fire Island became known as being the antithesis of New York City with its slow, relaxed pace and became the premium bohemian retreat for the rich and famous, who traded concrete and skyscrapers for the sand and sun. Today it is as chic as ever, and even though it is the ultimate location to set up a beach house or open a restaurant, it has still not lost its old world charm. As the website quotes “we are proud to state that Fire Island has never succumbed to the commercialism and class distinction that haunts the Hamptons”. For ferry timetables as well as a concise restaurant guide, look up www.fireisland.com.

Helicopter ride

If you’re making an all too brief visit to New York City and are preoccupied that you won’t get to see everything the city has to offer, what better way than to take it all in from than above? New York Helicopter Charter, Inc. offer several choices of chopper tours that allow you to take in the sights in style, without ever leaving the comfort of your seat! Enjoy the freedom of soaring over Central Park, Liberty Island and the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge at very reasonable rates. Check out www.newyorkhelicopter.com for more details.

Formerly known as Longacre Square when it was a sprawling rural estate, Times Square got its current name after the New York Times decided to move its headquarters to mid-town Manhattan in 1924. To this day, it still occupies the south tower of the square, where a huge glitter ball is dropped annually on New Year’s Eve.

Black and white photos show a Times Square in the Sixties that was already lit up with billboards and neon signs. However, most everything else has changed about Times Square as our parents knew it. Not long ago, from 42nd Street all the way up to 49th Street on Broadway, the blocks were crowded with peep shows, adult shops and an assortment of unsavoury characters. Now, since Mayor Giuliani’s time in office (and some say Mayor Edward Koch before him in 1980), it is the home of flagship stores for Swatch, MAC cosmetics, Toys R Us, American Eagle, Forever 21 and Sephora, to name but a few.

The restaurants that now populate Times Square’s blocks are family oriented; Bubba Gump, Hard Rock Café, Planet Hollywood, TGI Fridays and many more to choose from. Need a cup of coffee? Try any of the Starbuck’s Cafes that sit on practically each corner of every block. Some might argue that the square is over-commercialized now and that it has lost a good deal of its character. But if that is what made it as accessible and fun to be in, who’s complaining?

Your first plan of action upon entering the square (apart from taking a moment to absorb the scene in all its lunacy) should be to head to TKTS on 46th Street and Broadway. This is a little building set up in front of the bronze statue of Father Francis Patrick Duffy and the glowing red steps that are set up for tourists in the summer, and its purpose is to serve as a one stop shop for all of the musicals showing in the various theatres in Times Square.

An inside secret is that, if you rush to TKTS before it closes in the evening before the first musicals show (in other words you should be there at 6:30 p.m. no later), there is a good chance you’ll get discounted tickets. They might not be for the more famous classics such as Phantom of the Opera and Chicago but it still grants you access to a Broadway show, which is awesome no matter which way you look at it.

After a night at the theatre, if you still have dollars in your wallet, take a moment to head to the restaurant at the very top of the Marriott Marquis on Broadway between 44th and 45th Street. This sprawling hotel has an elevator at its core that will take tourists all the way up (hold on tight!) to the restaurant, which is aptly named The View. The beauty of this fancy eatery and bar is that it rotates, giving you a panoramic view of the city, twinkling at night. It doesn’t move fast enough to make anyone nauseous, but it is still tempting to abandon all maturity and plant one foot in the centre of the restaurant by the elevator, so that your legs are going in opposite directions. You didn’t hear it from me.

What you do the following day is really up to you, depending on your budget and time limits. Fans of museums (especially of the novelty variety) will love Ripley’s Believe it or Not, a newer addition to the square, and Madame Tussaud’s Museum for some incredibly realistic wax works with whom you can pose and make everyone at home jealous. Both are located on 42nd Street between Broadway and Eight Avenue. Music lovers on the other hand, will want to head to Colony music shop on 48th Street for the widest range of sheet music you are guaranteed to see in any one place.

Also worth checking out is Sam Ash music shop for instruments on 48th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenue. If you have a child in the family, or are a big kid yourself, take a stroll into Toys R Us on Broadway and 42nd Street and try to leave. Finally, stop in to any of the above mentioned eateries to polish off what is guaranteed to be the trip of a lifetime.

Take advantage of free entry into the Children’s Museum of Manhattan on the first Friday of every month from 5-8pm, sponsored by Target. This is a fun day out for the entire family with games and activities galore. On all other days, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for Saturdays, when it is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Children and adults cost $11.00 where senior tickets cost just $7.00. Kids are advised to eat before visiting the museum, since food is not allowed past admission, and to wear comfortable clothes. It is conveniently located off Central Park in the Tisch Building, 212, West 83rd Street. Check out www.cmom.org.

If you’re kids are fascinated with astrology, head to the American Museum of Natural History where they can be astronauts for the day and explore, stars, asteroids and planets. Kids can also marvel at the huge dinosaur skeletons on exhibition. This is suitable for ages 8 and up but younger children are also welcome. The museum is located on Central Park West at 79th Street. For more information, check out their website at www.amnh.org or call (212) 769-5606.

Take a horse and carriage ride around Central Park and let kids observe the beautiful grassy banks, the weeping willows and the lush waterfalls at the lake. Have a competition to see who can spot the first turtle. The trip costs $30 per half hour (per carriage) and $20 for an additional hour. You should also include a tip. Longer trips can be negotiated so check with your driver. Sights on the tour include, the pond, the Sheep Meadow, Mall (statues), the Carousel and the Zoo. Approx. distance for a half hour is .75 miles. You can located a carriage ride on Central Park South (59th Street) between 5th and 6th Avenues.

When you’re done, ask to be dropped off at the Tisch Children’s Zoo. It can be found within the Central Park Zoo at 64th Street and 5th Avenue. It is an ideal setting for toddlers in that it offers them a chance to learn about farm animals in a safe and fun environment, right in the middle of New York City! The zoo is home to cows, pigs, goats, sheep and a host of other creatures. On top of that, kids can interact with the animals, using the animal food dispensers in the petting zoo. Older kids can watch snow monkey splash around in their pool and join zookeepers as they feed sea lions, penguins and harbour seals during daily enrichment sessions. During the summer, the park is open from 10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. daily and the winter hours are 10.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. daily. Children (Ages 3-12) are admitted for $7.00 and adults are $12.00, while senior tickets are $9.00. Children under 3 years of age go free and the zoo is wheelchair and stroller accessible!

Take a boat around Central Park Pond. Rowboats enable the whole family to explore the park from a completely unique perspective and give an added thrill to the whole experience. It’s also incredibly romantic. Allow the kids the challenge to row and see their faces light up in the sunlight. There are a total of 100 boats for rental and a max of 4 people per boat. The boathouse is open from 10.am until dusk (weather permitting) and cost $12 per first hour and $2.50 per each ¼ hours thereafter. Also bear in mind that there is a $20 deposit. The Loeb Boathouse is located at East 72nd Street and Park Drive North, within the park.

If you’re kids are fascinated with astrology, Head to the American Museum of Natural History where they can be astronauts for the day and explore, stars, asteroids and planets. This is suitable for ages 8 and up but younger children are also welcome. The museum is located on Central Park West at 79th Street. For more information, check out their website at www.amnh.org or call (212) 769-5606.

Stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge (at no cost whatsoever!) and watch children marvel at the beautiful sights either side of the landmark. When you’re done, stop into Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory on the Brooklyn side, naturally, for a little taste of heaven. To walk across the bridge from Manhattan, take the 4/5/6 subways to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall or the 2/3 to Park Place. To walk across the bridge from Brooklyn, take the A/C to High Street or the 2/3 to Clark Street. If you’re planning a later trip, stop into Grimaldi’s for some authentic Italian Pizza (so famed are their pizzas that they make only that, no pasta dishes) served by Italians at tables decked out with red and white check cloths. The restaurant is located under the bridge on the Brooklyn side at 19 Fulton Street. Just be prepared to queue for up to half an hour for a coveted seat at this hole in the wall.

During the summer, free movie festivals seem to pop up all over the city. For a particular atmospheric treat, head to the Brooklyn Bridge Park for the 12th season of Movies with a View, sponsored by Syfy Channel. The movies are not all sci-fi for those of you who are wondering, and although they are not all screened for children, they most always suit a universal audience. We watched West Side Story one night (sans kids mind you) and the whole night was truly unforgettable. The movies are screened from 6.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. every Thursday from July 7 to September 1 and the exact address is Pier 1, Harbour View Lawn. It is worth staking a place on the grass an hour before to ensure a good view of the screen, so bring picnic snacks! No pets or alcohol allowed in the park. Look up www.brooklynbridgepark.org for screenings.

Visit Toys R Us in Times Square and see your toddler scream in delight at the Ferris wheel, which is the height of the store and has views of each floor. It is also super cute, with cars in the design of M&Ms, Toy Story and My Little Pony. While admission is not cheap at $4.50, it is still impressive, for kids and adults alike. While you’re in the store, get your picture taken by one of the employees or a dress up character, check out the amazing assortment of toys that will keep the family entertained for a full morning, and try not to drool at the selection of candy on the 3rd floor. Also present in the store is Babies R Us with its adorable baby products.

While there are so many activities for kids to engage in during their time in New York City, there is nothing more quintessentially New York than a FREE ferry trip to Staten Island, taking in the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as well as the breathtaking views of lower Manhattan. Kids will love this refreshing trip, especially experienced from the deck of the ship and they can take in a little piece of history with Ellis Island and Lady Liberty herself. If older kids feel up to it, they can climb up the statue with mom and dad and take pictures to boast to friends back home!

New York has long been shown to us as being one of the most romantic cities in the world. From movies to music New York has always had a magical air to it that has attracted tens of thousands of visitors wanting a piece of it. If you have been drawn to the big apple like so many before you and are planning a beautifully romantic trip you’ll need to know just where to go to find the romance! This list will give you a few pointers as to how to make your trip one to remember;

Central Park

Whisk away your Princess in a horse and carriage around Central Park, or perhaps a romantic boat ride below Bow Bridge is just what you’re looking for. Central Park just oozes with romance especially in the evening when it can’t fail to make anyones heart melt.

The River Café

Located just under the Brooklyn Bridge, the River Café offers a picturesque backdrop of the East River being lit up with the stunning Manhattan city lights reflecting off it. Combine the perfect view with the delicious Asian continental cuisine and you have yourself a very romantic dinner setting.

Empire State Building

A view from the top of the enormous Empire State Building looking over the gorgeous city of New York won’t fail to make anyone weak at the knees and fall in love with you! Once again, for the perfect romantic gesture just wait until it is dark and you’ll be able to see the city glowing from as far as 80 miles away. It’s quite easy to see why it has been used in romantic movies such as Sleepless in Seattle.

Ice Skating

Nothing will get you holding hands faster than ice skating at the Rockefeller Center! Just imagine the white snow falling from the sky on a romantic December evening as you hold each other up on the glistening ice. Now tell me that doesn’t sound like an enchanting night to remember!

Hudson River

To get away from all of the hustle and bustle of New York City and see a much more idyllic side to the big apple then you should definitely mosey on down to the fantastic Hudson River Park. Here you can have yourselves a nice romantic picnic with beautiful views of both the Hudson River and New Jersey.

Hudson Library Bar

For a truly effective way to make a girl swoon, take her to the very luscious Hudson Library Bar! Sink into one of their gorgeous leather sofas and spend the entire night chatting and drinking with the bars roaring fire to keep you both cozy and warm.

Brooklyn Botanical Gardens

Pretty pink cherry blossoms falling down on you both as you take a romantic walk in the very stunning Botanical Gardens is perhaps the perfect way to spend a Valentines Day. Watch as the cute little ducklings cross your path and the very colourful flowers add to the heart warming atmosphere.

So you have finally decided to take the big leap and move to the buzzing city of New York! Well to survive in such a concrete jungle you are going to need a job. However, like most jobs around these days you are going to need to open up a bank account. Of course if you have all the correct documentation then this shouldn’t really be too much of a problem for you, but just to clarify on how to go about doing such a task I will go through it with you;

There are essentially 2 different types of banks in New York, on the one hand you’ve got the large full service banks which offer anything from checking and savings accounts to much more bigger things such as mortgages, brokerage accounts and wealth management. On the other hand you have small regional banks which deal with the basics in banking like checking and savings accounts and brokerage. So when choosing your bank it is really just dependent on what your financial needs are.

In order to open any bank account in New York you are going to need several forms of essential documentation at the ready before you even step foot in a branch. You’ll need proof of where you are living in the U.S, proof of how you’ll add funds to your bank balance and last but not least 2 forms of I.D.

A valid passport, letter from an employer, your Visa and your foreign driving license are all acceptable forms of I.D. You may even use one of your credit cards as a form of identification if it is absolutely necessary!

There is no need to panic about proof of address if you are living in temporary accommodation as long as you can provide some sort of evidence such as an official letter which explains this fact. If however you have managed to secure yourself a permanent place to live then all you’ll need is something with your address on, such as a utility bill, copy of the tenancy agreement (lease) or even a payslip/paystub.

I highly recommend that you have a social security number before you open up a bank account. It’s not set in stone or anything but it will help you tremendously when you’re applying for a bank account. Upon depositing money in your brand spanking new bank account, your chosen bank will then give you a temporary debit card which you’ll then be able to use until your permanent card arrives. It should take around a week for your bank to post your card to you which is why the temporary card is so useful! Pretty much all banks you step into will try to offer you a credit card too but this application can take nearly a whole month.

There many different banks around New York so you won’t be hard pressed to find one suitable for your needs, just look around until you find one which welcomes you in with open arms and provides you with all the services you require.

As the clock ticks to midnight and we enter a new year, there isn’t a more exciting place for you to be than in New York! I’m sure we have all seen the movies and television shows where huge crowds gather in Times Square for what is perhaps the biggest celebration of the year, now imagine actually being there and taking part in it!

Around 1 million people gather in Times Square to watch as the giant clock on the big screen ticks down towards midnight. Members of the public are provided with little fun handouts such as cute little American flags, pom-poms and even little confetti bags to throw in the air when it strikes midnight!

As we’re in the last 60 seconds, you’ll see a lighted ball descend upon New York marking the end of a year and the beginning of a new one. Once we hit that New Year, the numerals of that year will be shined brightly above Times Square as 1 million people cheer together in celebration and confetti is released from the tops of buildings!

Best make sure you’re looking your absolute best as you just might find yourself appearing on television. That’s right, the whole event is filmed through a live broadcasting across the world for everyone to enjoy. It is definitely advised that you wrap yourself up warm too as it still the middle of winter and it is bound to get a little nippy out there. Of course the most important thing to make sure you do is to wear some comfortable shoes – I’m afraid your Jimmy Choos simply won’t do.

If like many other party animals on New Years Eve you’re more of a night owl than an early bird then there are many clubs you can hit after watching the countdown in Times Square. It is New York after all so it won’t be that much of a struggle to find a nice and exciting club for you to get on your dancing shoes and dance the night away!

It’s not just Times Square which sees all the action, there are plenty of other really fun ways to enter the New Year in New York! Why not head on down to Brooklyn where there is a countdown at the Grand Army Plaza and fireworks once it hits 12? Why not do things differently and go for a run at midnight? I know it sounds crazy but every year people gather in Central Park for a 4 mile run finished by non-alcoholic champagne and lots of beautiful fireworks. It’s definitely a nice way to break from the norm, meet interesting new people and experience what you don’t usually see on camera!

No matter what you decide to do or where you decide to go this New Years Eve, as long as you are in New York you won’t fail to have a night to remember! Head to the big apple for the biggest and best new years party you will have ever been invited to!

New York may be s shopper’s heaven but what most people don’t realize is that there is a lot more to the Big Apple that meets the eye. There are plenty of things you can do in New York without having to spend bags of cash to have a fabulous time! For a guide on some the greatest fun things to do without spending a single cent, just check out the list below;

Bryant Park

During the summer months in New York, classic movies are screened to members of the public in Bryant Park. Showing usually starts around 8pm although I definitely advise setting up your own picnic spot at around 6pm as it can get a little crowded later on. Expect to see great classics such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Dirty Harry.

Central Park

843 acres of luscious greenery and water with an absolutely stunning backdrop of skyscrapers, it’s quite easy to see why Central Park is world renowned. Free tours are available in the park but if you can spare the coin you can actually tour in style by riding in a horse and carriage or even a pedicab!

The Staten Island ferry

What better way is there to see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and even Lower Manhattan than by ferry?! The ferry is a popular mode of transport for New York residents to commute between Battery Park and Staten Island for absolutely free. However, it’s also a great way for tourists to see beautiful sights and capture pictures that will make your loved ones back home green with envy!

New York Public Library

Constructed out of marble in 1911 and holding some of the world’s oldest books, the New York Public Library has to be one of the world’s greatest libraries. The New York Public Library holds free exhibitions, public classes and programs for people of all ages. Though the programs and public classes are primarily designed for residents of New York, there is absolutely no reason why you as a tourist can not go to one of its fine exhibitions. Even if you’re not a fan of libraries, it’s worth a look just for the simple fact it was featured in Ghostbusters!

The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine

You don’t have to be a religious man to appreciate the absolutely stunning architecture of the biggest gothic cathedral in the world – The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine! I definitely recommend checking out its beautiful Biblical Garden and of course the Peace Fountain.

Times Square Subway Station & Grand Central Station

I know what you’re thinking – “fun in a subway station?!” For those of you with a passion for music then this might be just the thing you’ll love! You’ll often find break dancers pulling off the freshest moves or opera singers making the travel for 9-5’ers that much more pleasant. I do advise you to keep an open mind when it comes to music in New York, you can find anything from guitarists busking on the streets to even 8-bit musicians composing music from their gameboys!

Sony Wonder Technology Lab

Perhaps one of the most entertaining museums you will ever come across in New York and admission is absolutely free! From exploring the wonders of nanotechnology to robots, this museum makes learning about technology a fantastic and fun experience for children. It utilizes a hands on approach and allows children to play games, dance in motion capture and even use haptic technology to see what it would be like to perform open heart surgery! Beware, you just may end up having even more fun than your kids!

The data on violent crime have reduced by two thirds in the last decade. Media and books have depicted New York City having hazard lurking around every corner. Therefore for, some new residents New York City can seem a rather intimidating place to call home. It is imperative to understand that the New York of today is dissimilar to the city of several years ago.

The economic problems and culture of the city in the 1960s created severe troubles and it became difficult to manage crime. By the 1990s however, the crime rate in New York City fell owing to the efforts of both Mayor Giuliani and police commissioner William Bratton who along with others helped create a secure city. Thousands of new officers for the NYPD were hired and new policing strategies and a computerized statistical tracking system was put into practice to enhance police performance. A cleanup in drugs was done with more control over the mafia and less cultural division. Even Central Park became a secure place to stroll at night.

Supposing that, it undoubtedly should not apply that residents should let their guard down or become unworried; New York City is still a very big city with many diverse ethnicities, religions and viewpoints. There are some straightforward safety measures new residents can take to make sure living in New York City is an enriching experience.

New residents are majorly anxious about getting around the city, especially at nighttime. When going to work, out to a bar, meeting a friend or trying a new restaurant in an unknown area of town it is best to have a transportation arrangement if it is clear for example that you will be walking after dark, plan your travel itinerary ahead of time and subsequently keep away from, murky or uninhabited streets. Never stop and consult a map; you will merely appear to be a tourist and thus make you a simple target for pickpockets. I t it is best to hire a cab you are uncertain about the security of a district. if you are taking the subway at night, stand near the ‘Off-Hours’ Waiting Area or by the Metro-Card booths. Densely populated Subway Cars are the securest.

The neighborhoods can be the most dangerous as far as the rate of crime is concerned: for the most part of the crime does not occur in the heavily populated, tourist hangouts. In New York crime rates vary, by neighborhood and by borough.

There are some areas of Brooklyn that have high-crime areas for example however this doesn’t mean that the entire borough is essentially horrific. New residents have to begin to be attentive of the k areas which can be kept away from. In New York City, even areas like Harlem and Alphabet City are harmless throughout the daytime.

You will be more comfortable getting around once you get familiar with the vicinity of New York City. Vigilance and usage of common sense to deal with adversities is the greatest guidance you get from New Yorkers.

While dealing with panhandlers, it is best to pay no attention to them. Be firm and determined in your disapproval. This may not be a problem you will run face a lot. However, a city crowded with 8 million people sometimes causes close accommodation. Men are advised to place wallets in front pockets and women are women are suggested to wear their purses across their shoulders. Pickpockets usually target someone who isn’t attentive.

Call 911 for an emergency and 311 for lesser violations such as a disturbance or robbery. Doors should be kept locked at all times. Locks are to be changed in a new house or apartment. When coming within the reach of your door, have your key prepared and be swift and efficient getting inside. When someone comes to your door always be sure you know who it is and on no account buzz anyone into the building unless they have come particularly for you. If you are going to be unavailable cancel your newspaper delivery and hold your mail-an answering machine should only say “We are not here. Please leave a message” and- at all times- refrain from giving too much information or say “I” suggesting you are alone.

Lastly, New York City is bursting with diversity; it is a city where respect and minding your own business is imperative. Diverse religions and cultures, various social groups and sexual orientations are plentiful in the city, so it is best not to stare and not to get involved. Others should be left to live their lives and judgments should not be passed even at a glance. It is always good to remain calm and composed even when others flare up- your security is always more revered than showing your rage. Confidence is imperative – look like you know where you are going and feel comfortable in the city. New Yorkers are very welcoming and eager to lend a hand. If you are bewildered or hesitant, don’t pause to ask someone for what you need. It won’t be long before the city develops into home.

The energy and architecture of New York is very different from rest of the United States, so if you want to live in the center of all the happenings then New York is the place to be. This city is divided into five majestic areas, all of which have undergone major changes and renovations in the past few decades. Brooklyn has shown the greatest improvement in this regard.

Since its founding in 1646, the area of Brooklyn has increased not only in quantity but quality as well. The map shows that it is made up of a 100 different types of neighborhoods and districts, all of which were once part of a separate country known by the name of Kings Country. But after the Dutch West India Trading Company let go of this area, it became the first charted city to be included in the state of New York. The various neighborhoods of Brooklyn have been able to maintain their own indentify while working together for its betterment – that is what makes Brooklyn different from Manhattan and other areas of New York. The Green Point can be a good example for that; not only the people living there have stayed for generations, they have also accepted their inclusion in Brooklyn and now consider themselves a proud part of it.

Brooklyn is known as the area for blue collared people, the citizens are very hard working and the large numbers of factories in the area have helped increase employment opportunities to a great extent. The recent gentrification within Brooklyn has made it into a place where people from all ethnicities can come live and work together in harmony. While taking a walk in the neighborhoods and streets of this area, you will strongly be reminded of an exotic European city, with its architectural wonders and classy shops and cafes.

Since the neighborhoods within Brooklyn are tight, the people generally know each other pretty well and if you are a stranger, they will never make you feel like one. Within a couple of days, you will feel as if you belonged to this place for years. The accent of a typical Brooklyn resistant is full of “dose, dems” etc; it became famous in the 20th century and was used in a number of movies and books. The two important things that lead to re-invention in Brooklyn were their ability to preserve their architectural historic wonders from the 19th century and their skill of utilizing the limited resources available. The areas around Brooklyn which have been abundant by factories etc are now being turned into beautiful streets with boutiques, cafes and restaurants serving food of various cultures. In addition to this, the unity of people of Brooklyn has been remarkably impressive; until Manhattan, the people are not cold blooded and stand up for each other. This has played an important role in accelerating the re-invention process within the place.

Brooklyn can be considered as much of a cosmopolitan city as any of a European city; it is not necessary for you to go to Manhattan to experience the global economic activates and pressure. This place not only offers you employment opportunities but also an affordable lifestyle with friendly neighborhoods for your children to grow up in.
